Using Macros with ChemStation
I recently upgraded the computer/OS running ChemStation software for my Agilent 8453 UV-Vis spectrophotometer from WinNT to WinXP (SP2). In so doing,
it was also necessary to upgrade the ChemStation software from Rev. A.08.03[71] that we were running to Rev. B.01.01[21] for compatibility with WinXP.
With the former ChemStation software, we used two Visual Basic macros (SPEKIN.MAC and TAB2EXCL.MAC) to transfer kinetics and other data from
ChemStation to MS Excel. However, with the new WinXP computer running Rev. B.01.01 ChemStation software, these macros no longer work, even though they
were loaded from the installation disk of the new version of ChemStation.
With these macros installed, we do get the “Export” pull-down menu and we have set the correct path for Excel. We have tried several alternatives for
transferring kinetics tabular data from ChemStation to Excel, including:
1. “Export selected table to Excel” from the Export menu in ChemStation gives us a dialog box that states: “Export to Excel! Error in macro
DDE_Excel_Init: Requested item (topics) not received (Channel 197494)”,
2. “Copy” from the Edit menu of ChemStation when the kinetics table is selected apparently does not load any data into the Windows buffer, because
nothing is pasted when we click “Paste” in Excel,
3. “Copy to Clipboard” from the Edit menu in ChemStation when the kinetics table is selected gives us a red warning at the bottom of the ChemStation
window stating “Selection only possible in graphical windows”.
We have also tried replacing Excel 2003, which we initially loaded on the new XP computer, with Excel 1997, which we successfully used to transfer
tabular kinetics data from the ChemStation Rev. A.08.03 software on the old NT computer. We thought that maybe the macros only work on the older Excel
1997, but this didn’t make any difference either.
As the software and macros now function (disfunction!), the only way we can transfer kinetics data is by using “Export kinetics data from one cell as
*.TXT file” in the Export menu of ChemStation. This is extremely inefficient, as each data point of a time trace is saved in separate TXT files, which
then must be opened and combined in Excel for analysis.
Does anyone know how to make these macros work in the Rev. B ChemStation software or have any other solutions for data transfer from ChemStation to
Excel?
